Supermarine Spitfire FR XIVe MV293 made its airshow debut wearing its original Indian Air Force paint scheme at IWM Duxford's VE Day Flying Day.Completed in July 1944, MV293 saw limited service in the UK before being shipped to India, with brief stints at both No 33 Maintenance Unit (MU) at Lyneham and No 215 MU at Dumfries in 1945. Arriving in Karachi, the Spitfire passed to Air Command South East Asia and then to No 8 Squadron of the Royal Indian Air Force by December 1947. With the squadron's slow conversion to the Tempest II, the Spitfires were accordingly declared surplus to requirements, MV293 likely moving the short distance from Kolar in the southern state of Karnataka to the Indian Air Force’s Technical College in Jallahali, Bangalore. It was later sold to Doug Arnold, arriving in England on 26 May 1978, and underwent restoration by Dick Melton and Pete Rushen before The Fighter Collection acquired the aircraft in late 1985. MV293 flew again on 14 August 1992 in a late-1940s overall silver scheme representing No 2 Squadron’s West Germany-based Spitfire FR XIVs. In 2000 it was painted into grey-green camouflage and JE-J codes as an homage to Group Captain J. E. ‘Johnnie’ Johnson’s F XIV MV268 to honour the RAF ace’s visit to the show, the scheme in which MV296 flew for many years.Sold to Graham Peacock in 2016, the Spitfire now flies under the Fighter Aviation Engineering Ltd banner operated by Air Leasing and was repainted during an overhaul in 2023.MV293 is due to display at the @Sywell 2024 airshow. Reduced price tickets are available until May 31st and kids under 12 go free. Visit www.sywell2024.co.uk for full details and to buy tickets.📷 Harry Measures ... See MoreSee Less
